Utah's "Masonry: It Makes A Village"

Utah's first "Masonry: It Makes a Village" competition, sponsored by Utah Masonry Council, held an awards ceremony at Sandy's South Towne Center on June 5, 2004.
The first-place award was presented to the team of Snyder Masonry and Architectural Nexus for their double-arched swing titled "Arcus."
The second-place award was presented to the team of A Good Brick Mason and Valentiner Crane Brunjes Onyon Architects for their footbridge titled "Gone Fishin'."
The third-place award was presented to the team of IMS Masonry, Inc., and Dale Allsop & Associates for their masonry Hummer titled "Masonry Hummms in 2004."
The People's Choice Award, decided by votes received from mall patrons, was presented to the team of Doyle Hatfield Masonry and architect Fred C. Cox for their covered wagon titled "Heading West: A Utah Tribute."
The first-place award-winning team will compete in the international "Masonry: It Makes A Village" competition to be held during MCAA's Masonry Showcase next year in Chicago.
The "Masonry: It Makes A Village" competition was established by Barbara Headrick, the Executive Director for Masonry Institute of Washington, in 2000. Teams comprised of architects and mason contractors work together to design a project utilizing specified materials and then build their design over a two-day period. The competition has grown in popularity and is now held in several states, as well as in Canada. The Utah Masonry Council was able to hold this competition due to the generosity of its members and sponsors.
All six projects were judged on Saturday afternoon by Barbara Headrick (Executive Director, Masonry Institute of Washington), Sorin Simonsen (AIA Salt Lake President, Cooper Roberts Simonsen), John Huish (Director of Campus Planning & Design, University of Utah), Donald Wakefield (Masonry Information Services), Danny Searle (Bricklayers Allied Craftworkers), William Mammen (Park City Architect), Charles Peterson (Architect), and Christina Huish (Artistic "Village" Citizen).
Utah Masonry Council (UMC) is a non-profit organization funded by member mason contractors and masonry industry suppliers to promote the use and understanding of masonry products and systems to professionals in building design and construction throughout Utah.
