John Deere Power Systems
Off-highway diesel engines that balance a compact size with heavy-duty power

John Deere Power Systems is a leading producer of off-highway diesel engines, supplying heavy-duty industrial engines and drive train components for John Deere products and a host of Herculean construction, landscape and ag equipment. As one of John Deere's four main manufacturing divisions, Power Systems engineers and produces a variety of OEM parts, including diesel engines, natural gas engines, axles, transmissions, pump drives and planetary drives. John Deere first entered the engine business in 1918 when it purchased Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co. In 1949, Deere produced its first diesel engine.

Innovative Compact Engine Lineup
Currently, the Tier 3 PowerTech M 2.4L and 4.5L engines from John Deere are the latest of its compact power plants. These are mechanically controlled, naturally aspirated, turbocharged, air-to-air intercooled engines. These engines will ship to OEMs for their Tier 3 machines. The PowerTech M 2.4L engine offers a power range of 31 kW to 37 kW (42 hp to 49 hp), and the PowerTech M 4.5L offers a power range of 56 kW to 75 kW (75 hp to 99 hp). Big benefits for these engines include such end-user perks as maintained low-speed torque and peak torque speed, transient response time (the amount of time it takes the engine to get up to speed), and a power bulge feature (power bulge is an increase in power as you go down in speed). Additional benefits include their compact size (the same as their Tier 2 counterparts), reduced noise and a 500-hour oil change. The PowerTech E 2.4L offers a power range of 45 kW to 60 kW (60 hp to 80 hp), the PowerTech E 3.0L offers a power range of 48 kW to 74 kW (65 hp to 99 hp) and the PowerTech E 4.5L offers a power range 63 kW to 104 kW (85 hp to 140 hp). These models offer turbocharging and air-to-air intercooling, which leads to such end-user benefits as increased low-speed torque, new higher peak torque ratings, better fuel economy and low installation costs. PowerTech E 4.5L is already in production and is being installed into compact equipment today. The E 4.5L also offers a compact size similar to its Tier 2 counterpart and features a multiple injection strategy that helps contribute to lower combustion temperatures and noise reduction. More end-user benefits include faster torque rise and a 500-hour oil change.

Yanmar Diesel
TNV Series diesels from the Japanese compact engine innovator

Yanmar has been producing diesel engines since 1933 and has manufactured more than 15 million diesel engines ranging from 4.5 hp to 5,000 hp. Today, more than 1 million Yanmar diesel engines are powering North America's leading edge mobile and stationary off-highway equipment. Yanmar makes construction equipment, generator sets, pressure washers, turf equipment, military applications and agricultural equipment. Founded in 1912, Yanmar developed the world's first practical small diesel engine, and provides compact diesel engines to more than 130 countries around the world.

Innovative Compact Engine Line
Yanmar introduced its new TNV Series of compact diesel engines in 2003.The lineup includes 10 TNV models stepped from 13.8 to 85.6 gross hp. The Yanmar model 3TNV82A exemplifies one of its most popular engines. It is rated at 24.7 hp at 2,500 rpm as utilized in the 6,306-lb (operating weight) Yanmar Vi027 mini excavator. The 3TNV82A three-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesel engine represents 21st century engineering and is designed to meet Tier 3 and Tier 4 emission requirements employing only simple mechanical controls. No electronic controls are needed. Improvements to the combustion and FIE systems result in cleaner combustion through refined air intake design. An inline fuel injection pump provides the same level of FIE performance as found in Yanmar's direct-injection engine models. A load timer adjusts injection timing in accordance with engine load. A fuel damping valve built into the delivery portion of the fuel pump stabilizes the pressure remaining after injection and prevents any secondary injection of fuel. Quieter operation also received close attention when making the TNV Series. A molybdenum coating in the piston skirt in combination with optimized clearance between the piston and cylinder reduces unwanted piston slap. Mechanical gear noise is minimized by the use of a smaller module for the valve timing and fuel injection pump in conjunction with improved tooth profiles.

Perkins Engines
The 400 Series is a driving force in compact power plants

From humble beginnings in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1932, Frank Perkins' engine company has grown to become a leading supplier of diesel and gas engines.

Ranging from 5 hp to over 2,600 hp, Perkins power plants command more than 5,000 different applications from more than 1,000 major equipment manufacturers. Perkins engines are used to power a wide variety of machines in diverse markets such as construction, industrial, marine, materials handling, power generation and the ag industry.

Innovative Compact Engine Line
Perkins 400 Series continues to capture the imagination of OEMs worldwide. With the rapid growth of compact machinery, especially in the construction market, a growing number of equipment manufacturers are adopting the 400 Series as their power plant of choice. There are currently more than 200 different applications that use 400 Series engines to provide power and reliability. The next challenge was to meet the impending emissions regulations for Europe and the United States. Intermat '06 saw the launch of Perkins' new 400D Series engines, which will meet major emissions legislative requirements up to 2013 for North American and Europe. Although the latest emissions legislation does not come into force until 2008, the company is keen to demonstrate to OEMs that it is well ahead in terms of engine development for the compact sector. The 400D Series will provide a number of benefits to OEMs including ease of changeover, greater choice with new model introductions to meet key power nodes and a whole host of product refinements to ease OEM installation and to improve the user experience. Three new model introductions (bringing the total line up to 10) will provide OEMs with an even broader choice of ratings with the launch of the turbo, air-to-air charge cooled 404D-22TA extending the range up to 49.2 kW, while the turbocharged 403D-15T and 403D-17 units will offer outputs around the important 30 kW node.

Despite the more stringent requirements of the forthcoming emissions regulations, the 400D models will not differ in terms of package size to their Tier 2 predecessors and will offer the same performance and power density. Heat rejection also is improved thanks to a reworking of the cooling flows, enabling a smaller radiator to be used.

Where You Can Find Them
The Perkins 400 Series can be found in skid steer loaders, ag tractors, rough terrain lift trucks, telehandlers, welders, pavers, trenchers, grinders, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, mowers, ground heaters, mulchers, gen sets and even de-watering pumps.
