ACC Concrete Tech Program Open for Fall 2011

ACC aggressively recruiting Freshmen to fill slots

By

After an outpouring of support from industry partners and community members, Alpena Community College's nationally known Concrete Tech program has been re-opened for Fall Semester 2011. ACC is now aggressively recruiting students to fill the remaining first-year slots.

Previously, the College announced it was considering cost-saving measures including scaling back the Concrete Tech program to accept a new class of freshmen every other year. A number of concerned concrete industry partners, program graduates, and Alpena community members wrote letters and emails of support and attended ACC's May 19 Board of Trustees meeting to encourage the College to maintain the program in its current form.

ACC's Board of Trustees Chairman John Briggs said of the re-opening, "Community colleges are known for responsiveness to industry needs and for being connected to their communities. The pride of stakeholders in ACC's unique, flagship Concrete Tech program moves us to make this strategic adjustment for the benefit of students and industry partners. We are counting on the teamwork of all concerned to make this phase of our work successful."

The Concrete Tech program has space for 35 first-year students. To fill these slots, ACC has initiated a number of actions aimed at encouraging students to enroll by July 14.

The ACC Foundation has announced the availability of 20 new Concrete Tech scholarships of $500 each designated for first-year students entering the program this fall. These scholarships are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To receive the scholarship, students must apply to ACC and enroll in the Concrete Tech program for Fall Semester 2011, which starts in August.

All interested students are invited to attend a Concrete Tech Open House on July 12 at 10:00 a.m. Attendees will tour ACC's World Center for Concrete Technology, meet with faculty members for academic advising, and learn about financial aid and admissions from Mike Kollien, Director of Admissions. After the open house, students will be able to take placement testing and enroll in classes. Interested students are encouraged to R.S.V.P. by calling Kollien at (989) 358-7339 or e-mailing him at kollienm@alpenacc.edu.

But interested students don't have to wait for the Open House to learn more about the Concrete Tech program and attending ACC. Staff and faculty members are available during June to answer questions, help students apply for financial aid, and tour the campus. Contact Kollien for more information.
