In its initial year, the race attracted more than 160 participants for the 5K and 18 youth who participated in the kids' 1/3-mile fun run. Also, $7,500 was donated to the Golden Fire Department. The course provided a unique experience that allowed runners to participate in a race, while enjoying the distinctive geological scenery provided by an environmentally responsible active quarry (operations were not active during race day).
“The day was a huge success,” said Todd Ohlheiser, Lafarge General Manager for Mountain West Aggregates. “We are always looking for ways to give back to the communities in which we operate and this race was a great opportunity to do just that. We also were able to involve local businesses and give the community the chance to look inside our operations, in addition to donating the proceeds from the race to the Golden Volunteer Fire Department.”
To complete the day, the race was followed by some well-received community/ family-focused post-race activities including face painting, a bouncy house, live music, and a Lafarge employee Ready Mix truck rodeo.
