Current trends and future directions

By

The Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) will present Innovation in Construction Information Technology: Current Trends and Future Directions on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 10:00 AM CDT.

The Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Owner/Operator (AECO) industry is constantly searching for new methods for increasing efficiency and productivity. In the complex and dynamic environment of construction sites where critical decisions are constantly made, the decision-making process and its consequent performance can be improved by enhancing Situation Awareness (SA) through new digital technologies. In this presentation, current trends in information mobility and visualization will be discussed and future efforts in areas such as BIM-assisted Mobile Augmented Reality and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle sensing in construction sites will be introduced. Challenges and opportunities of the presented technological trends will also be discussed.

Dr. Javier Irizarry is an Assistant Professor in the School of Building Construction at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is the Director of the CONECTech Lab which mission is to establish the framework for developing next generation technology enhanced solutions to construction environment problems by incorporating the cognitive processes of the human component of construction operations. Dr. Irizarry’s research interests include technology enhanced construction safety, Human Computer Interaction issues in mobile applications for Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Owner/Operator (AECO) information access, interactive visualization systems for AECO education, Building Information Modeling based Augmented Reality applications for AECO, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle sensing for applications in construction environments. His industry experience includes the planning and construction of multiple types of infrastructure facilities including but not limited to transportation, and parking structures, marine facilities, and residential and commercial structures. Dr. Irizarry is a Licensed Professional Engineer, Certified Green Professional and holds a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, a Masters in Engineering Management from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico and a PhD in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.
