Southeast Concrete Masonry Association holds first summer meeting

News from the Southeast Concrete Masonry Association

By

The Southeast Concrete Masonry Association held its first summer meeting as a new organization in July at the Marriott Grande Dunes Resort in Myrtle Beach. Attendance was up over twenty percent from the previous year with support from across the industry! Thank you for all in attendance.

Speakers included Nick Lang with the National Concrete Masonry Association, Tina Subasic, PE, Consulting Engineer, SCMA and Dr. Richard Bennet, PhD. PE, Consulting Engineer, SCMA. Topics included LEED and its future, Code Development and Implementation and the CMU Check Off initiative. SCMA, formerly the Carolinas Concrete Masonry Association, was formed with the inclusion of Tennessee and Virginia into the organization.

Thank you to NCMCA, Brandon and Meredith Hartsell, and Gates Construction for your support of SCMA.

Southeaster Concrete Masonry Association President Byard Stevens was in Charlotte in August to once again present the SCMA program “Understanding Masonry.” The engaging presentation dispels misconceptions about masonry costs and perceived problem issues, and reinforces the benefits of all-masonry construction. Members of the Charlotte Architectural Collaborative listen to the program, which included a segment about NCMCA’s Masonry Contractor Certification Program. The Understanding Masonry program has been presented to architects, owners and engineers in both Carolinas, Virginia and in Tennessee. In most North Carolina presentations, NCMCA representatives have participated by introducing attendees to the certification program. NCMCA President-Elect, Bob Gates joined Stevens for the Charlotte program.

The Second Annual Blockyard 500 Scholarship Fundraiser will be held at the GoPro Motorplex in Mooresville on Wednesday October 21, 2015.
