Building Reinforced Masonry: The Basics

This seminar will educate masons, inspectors and designers on construction of quality reinforced masonry construction following building code requirements and industry practices. An overview of masonry materials will cover mortar, grout, concrete masonry units and brick. Correct techniques for mortar placement, using horizontal and vertical reinforcement, and grout consolidation will be followed by discussion of testing and inspection requirements. Special topics such as hot-and cold- weather construction, what causes masonry efflorescence and using new materials such as self-consolidating grout will be addressed. Attendees are encouraged to register for and attend one of the special Masonry Concrete Block hands-on training events Wednesday afternoon to review proper masonry construction. NOTE: Separate registration fee for the hands-on training WEMDM1 (12:00 pm - 2:00 pm) or WEMDM2 (3:00 pm – 5:00 pm)

1. Assess how to build reinforced masonry, including placing mortar and reinforcement and grouting walls
2. Provide simple material requirements for mortar, grout, concrete block, and brick
3. Recommend inspection and testing requirements and how they apply to quality masonry construction
4. Apply hot- and cold-weather construction requirements to reinforced masonry construction
