2005 International Excellence in Masonry Awards
The 2005 MCAA International Excellence in Masonry Awards Competition took place on Tuesday night, April 19 at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The premier awards program for excellence in masonry was once again an outstanding success.The ceremony kicked off with a video awards program, giving recognition to mason contractors, architects, engineers and construction customers for outstanding accomplishments in masonry selection, design and construction.
The MCAA would like to congratulate all of the winners:
Industrial/Commercial

1st Place: TPC Craig Ranch, McKinney, TX
Mason Contractor: Dee Brown, Inc.
Architect: Three Architecture
Judges Comments: This project was awarded 1st place due to the overall craftsmanship to construct a project of this caliber. The use of masonry materials paired with the overall design earns TPC Craig Ranch first place.

2nd Place: American West Bank, Spokane, WA
Mason Contractor: Spilker Masonry
Architect: Steven Meek Architects
Judges Comments: The American West Bank was awarded 2nd place due to the overall masonry detailing used in this project. The judges were impressed that a commercial building displayed such intricate brickwork that you do not commonly see in modern buildings.

Honorable Mention: Gaylord Texan Resort, Grapevine, TX
Mason Contractor: Brazos Masonry, Inc.
Architect: Hnedak Bobo Group
Judges Comments: The judges awarded this project an honorable mention for the masonry craftsmanship put into a project of this scale. They were especially drawn to the stone and arch work of this large interior project.
Residential

1st Place: YWCA Opportunity Place, Seattle, WA
Mason Contractor: J&S Masonry, Inc.
Architect: Stickney Murphy Romine Architects, PLLC
Judges Comments: First Place goes to YWCA Opportunity Place for the overall scope of the project combined with the creative use of masonry to add artistic detailing to the building's brick exterior.

2nd Place: Townley Residence, Watkinsville, GA
Mason Contractor: Halloran Masonry, Inc.
Architect: Tony Townley
Judges Comments: Second Place was awarded to the Townely Residence for the level of craftsmanship displayed in every element of veneer, paving and brickwork incorporated in this masonry masterpiece.

Honorable Mention: Turtle Creek Residence, Turtle Creek, TX
Mason Contractor: Dee Brown, Inc.
Architect: Larry E. Boerder & Associates
Judges Comments: Honorable mention goes to Turtle Creek for the masonry craftsmanship dedicated to constructing a project of this scale. Judges noted the attention to old world masonry detail with its Classic Italian Romanesque Architecture that took the contractor 2.5 years to complete.
Pavers/Retaining Walls/Landscaping

1st Place: Texas A&M University - Aggie Bonfire Memorial College Station, TX
Mason Contractor: Brazos Masonry, Inc.
Architect: Overland Partners
Judges Comments: The Aggie Bonfire Memorial displays the creative works of both the designer and contractor on this carefully planned memorial. The impressive portals, some stones weighing up to 30,000 pounds each, were a feat of masonry skill to erect and reflect the spirit and dedication of the victims.
Education: K-8

1st Place: Palm Dessert Community Presbyterian Church, Palm Desert, CA
Mason Contractor: Masonry Technology, Inc.
Architect: MKA - Martinez/Kuch Architects
Judges Comments: First place was awarded for craftsmanship in the many details that add to this project. The use of masonry materials including cmu's and glass block features create an aesthetically and artistically appealing project.

2nd Place: Eastmont Junior High School, Eastmont, WA
Mason Contractor: Spilker Masonry Company
Architect: ALSC Architects, P.S.
Judges Comments: Judges awarded second place to Eastmont Jr High for the interesting use and integration of multiple masonry materials. The use of functional sunscreens also added to the detailing of this project.
Education: 9-12

1st Place: Mount Tahoma High School, Tacoma, WA
Mason Contractor: Serpanok Construction
Architect: BLRB Architects
Judges Comments: The overall design and scale of this project alone warranted an award. Judges were impressed by the design, complexity and masonry detailing that helped to break up such a large scale project.

2nd Place: Woodberry Forest School - Terry House, Woodberry Forest, VA
Mason Contractor: M3, Inc.
Architect: Bartzen and Ball, PLLC
Judges Comments: Second place was awarded for the traditional use of masonry to blend the project in with surrounding structures giving you the feeling it had always been there.
Education: College/University

1st Place: Grinnell College Residence East Campus, Grinnell, IA
Mason Contractor: Forrest & Associate, Inc.
Architect: William Rawn Associates
Judges Comments: This project pushed the edge of design and uses masonry to achieve it. The use of masonry is unique and with the design creates a prime example of how masonry can add to the overall design of a project.

2nd Place: Trinity Women's and Girl's Athletic Facility, Washington, DC
Mason Contractor: Spartan Masonry
Architect: Hughes Group Architects
Judges Comments: The judges felt the use of brick detailing on this project added to the overall design and is yet another example of how superb masonry craftsmanship can create a project of excellence.

Honorable Mention: Baylor University Sciences Building, Waco, TX
Mason Contractor: Brazos Masonry, Inc.
Architect: Harley Ellis
Judges Comments: What caught the judges' eyes were the crisp clean lines of the masonry detailing put into a project of this massive size. They were also impressed with the 96 masons it took to create this project, a supervising feat in itself.
Government/Institutional

1st Place: St. Martin's Episcopal Church, Houston, TX
People's Choice Award
Mason Contractor: W.W. Bartlett
Architect: Jackson & Ryan Architects
Judges Comments: One of the judges' favorite projects, Saint Martin's speaks for itself when it comes to masonry craftsmanship. The first place award goes to Saint Martin's Episcopal Church.

2nd Place: Our Lady of Lourdes, Washington, MO
Mason Contractor: Leonard Masonry, Inc.
Architect: Chiodini Associates
Judges Comments: Second Place goes to Our Lady of Lourdes for the traditional design and craftsmanship displayed in this project.
Rehab/Restoration

1st Place: Emerson Grand Basin, St. Louis, MO
Mason Contractor: Leonard Masonry, Inc.
Architect: Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Inc.
Judges Comments: First place is awarded to this great historical landmark revived back to life bringing back the wonders of the 1904 World's Fair.
