Angelus Block has received ICC-ES SAVE: Verification of Attributes Report™ for Postconsumer Recycled Content.

Angelus Block has received ICC-ES SAVE: Verification of Attributes Report™ for Postconsumer Recycled Content.
Angelus Block Co., Inc. has received independent verification of a minimum 25% postconsumer recycled content in its concrete masonry units. ICC Evaluation Service has released a Verification of Attributes Report™ (VAR-1018) issued under its Sustainable Attributes Verification and Evaluation™ (SAVE™) Program, which provides a comprehensive evaluation of the sustainable attributes of building products. Postconsumer content offers the most value to projects seeking to satisfy green building strategies.

The VAR for Angelus Block encompasses production plants in four counties and regions: Ventura (Oxnard, California), Los Angeles (Gardena, California), Orange (Orange, California), and San Bernardino/Riverside (Fontana, California).

"Angelus Block can uniquely offer proximity to the entire Southern California region," said John Surratt, Angelus Block Architectural Sales Manager. "Though LEED Rating Systems establish a 500-mile radius for their Regional Materials credits, the practical reality is that many masonry contractors either haul their own materials, or often require quick access to 'parts-and-pieces' as needed to keep things moving. Projects are better served, and real environmental impact is reduced, when product sources are 20 to 30 miles away rather than 120 or more miles from the project site. It's an economic and environmental win-win."

Applicability is noted in VAR-1018 to seven rating systems, codes, and standards, including four of the LEED Rating Systems - LEED 2009 for New Construction, LEED 2009 for Schools, LEED 2009 for Core and Shell, and LEED for Homes 2008. Compliance with the recently updated and mandated 2010 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen) is included in the VAR, as well as the National Green Building Standard (ICC 700-2008), and ANSI/GBI 01-2010 - Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings.

"Though products in and of themselves cannot earn rating system points," Surratt explained, "high recycled content products such as that evaluated in this VAR, especially when combined with the high cement-replacement potential of masonry grout, provide a very substantial contribution to a project's green goals. Having a resource such as this VAR gives the project team confidence in specifying high RC cmu from a widely respected source without concern of any kind of distance handicap. It is a very powerful asset in the green designer's palette."
