NC State/NCMCA 2015 Masonry Design Competition

Team of Cui, Schulte, Scott and Allen claims prize

By

The team of Yujie Cui of Kunming, Yunnan, China; Emily Schulte of Blythewood, SC; Gillian Scott of Wilmington, NC; and Maggie Allen of Greenville, SC has claimed the 2015 NCSU Sigmon Memorial Scholarship Masonry Design Award and will share a semester’s tuition as their prize.

NCMCA Past President Doug Burton and Raleigh architect Maria Papiez of BBH Design served as jurors for the October 14th competition, which required the team to design and model a hypothetical masonry office building. The competition is part of Professor Patrick Rand’s “Architectural Construction Systems” class at NC State University’s College of Design. Ms. Papiez competed in the contest as an NC State College of Design student in 2008.

Ten teams participated. Finishing in second place was the team of Sara Clark, Katie O’Campo, Monique Kowalik, and Violet Bernard. Third place was Ryan Houser, Matus Ferguson, Joshua Putnam and Austin Chappell. The fourth place team was Alexander Buck. Austin Corriher, and Caroline A Cox.

The scholarship is named in memory of David, Randy, and Dwayne Sigmon. 2015 marks the fifteenth year for the NC State/NCMCA Sigmon design competition.
