Masonry Facades: Repair and Restoration
Discipline: Masonry Products
What can be done when a masonry façade cracks, spalls, or, worst of all, leaks? Masonry facades have served as durable, effective envelopes throughout human history; however, poor performance and failures are possible. What types of things should be considered when a masonry façade is evaluated? This seminar will introduce two new guides to masonry façade inspection and review façade ordinances. Once a cause or causes are discovered, what are the options for remediation? Historic and modern masonry construction, common types of failure, and remediation options will be discussed.
1. Assess ordinances and new recommended practices for evaluation and inspection of masonry facades
2. Identify various types and causes of distress that might be found in historic and modern masonry walls
3. Examine masonry materials and environmental factors that contribute to masonry distress and moisture infiltration
4. Explore different methods to repair cracks and near-surface distress and review options for restoring anchorage and continuity of masonry without rebuilding
