Changing of the Guard

President’s Message

By

Having served as your President for the past two years, I can certainly say it has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience for me and I thank the members for allowing me the opportunity to serve!

The challenging things that need to be done and the rewards when things are accomplished are so great, it is easy to stay charged up for this position. Working with dedicated senior officers, board members and committed staff has been an experience I would not have passed up.

Owning and operating a relatively small mason contracting company that has fortunately fared well over the years, I felt uniquely qualified and motivated to commit to the eight year journey as a senior officer, representing you, as an average sized contractor member, and hopefully giving something back to an industry I have gotten so much out of.

Obviously, for many reasons, everyone cannot commit to participate at this level, but there are plenty of things you can do. You can support your industry and this Association simply by attending our meetings and shows and maintaining your membership. How about volunteering for a committee? How about sponsoring a competitor associate as a new member or taking a leadership role at the local chapter level? Share your ideas, experiences and enthusiasm or write an article for our monthly magazine. Lose the “what’s in it for me” attitude and imagine what we could accomplish as a national organization if we were backed by every mason contractor. Competing wall systems would be blown away!

In the past two years, we have hired a full-time Director of Engineering, budgeted for a full-time Director of Government Affairs, established a new durable comprehensive Long Range Strategic Plan, negotiated for the first time to purchase our own building, and even changed the way we run our Board meeting. Finally, as an association, we spend our time looking to the future rather than reporting the past. We needed to focus on where we want to be and how we are going to get there. That change alone allows us to extract greater value out of our time together.

My biggest disappointment is that we have not yet captured the minds and checkbooks of more of our fellow competitor mason contractors. I see increasing our membership to keep our programs well-funded as an increasingly important goal for the future.

Please join me in supporting Mr. Bill McConnell of Boston as our next MCAA President. He is well-qualified and dedicated to the task, has a love of the industry, and has gained my full confidence. Together we can expect a prosperous future for our association.

Thank you.
